In Getting Started with Windows 2000, "Win2K's Application Compatibility Tool to the Rescue" (December 2000), Kathy Ivens explains how to use apcompat.exe. When Apcompat fails, you can use the Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit's imagecfg.exe tool. This tool changes an image's Win32GetVersion value to whatever you'd like. For example,

imagecfg -w 0xC0000004 image.exe

makes an image think that it's running on Windows 95. Unfortunately, the resource kit's Help file doesn't document the proper values. But if a crucial application is holding back your Win2K rollout, this little utility might be worth the research.
